Chapter 18

“YOU’VE GOT TO BE FUCKING kidding me,” Cole said, and moved his hand off my mouth, but he didn’t let go of me.

The warmth of his body was already seeping into me, and I hated that he could do this to me.

“Are you out of your mind?” he said as his hand traveled down my body.

Aw crap.

He was going for my pocket, wasn’t he?

“Do you know you can get mugged here? Or worse?” He snatched my wallet.

“Okay, duly noted. Now stop mugging me.”

“This isn’t a joke, Ava. You shouldn’t be here, so why are you? Were you following me? Because if you did, that’s really stupid.”

“Why don’t you tell me what you are doing here instead?” I waited for him to let go of me, but he didn’t.

Great.

I didn’t mind being in his arms, though.

“That’s not what you should be worried about right now.”

“Yeah, whatever. Just give me my wallet back. Maybe I was going after you because I thought you’d protect me from getting mugged.”

“Oh, come on. I know where you live, and it’s not anywhere around here. And I know your parents always come pick you up when you need it.” His lips hovered very close to my ear, reminding me of how good it felt when he nipped on my earlobe.

“Okay, fine. I was following you. I’m sick and tired of not knowing what’s going on. Now let me go.”

“No, I’m not letting you go.”

I shifted and elbowed him in the ribs, not too hard, but he let go of me anyway.

When I faced him, he held his hand over his chest. I must’ve hit one of his bruises or something.

“Sorry,” I said. “But I wanted you to let me go.”

“How many times are we going to have the same conversation?” he asked.

“I don’t know. I guess that’s up to you. When are you going to start telling me the truth?” I cocked my head at him.

He shook his head. “You don’t want the truth. You want me to tell you exactly what you want to hear, but it’s not going to happen.”

“All right. Look me in the eye and tell me you don’t love me.” My face was serious as my gaze was trained on his.

He just watched me for a few moments.

“I don’t love you,” he said. “There. I said it. Will you fuck off now?”

There was way too much tension in his voice, and I wasn’t even sure if he knew that he was yelling.

I was about to say that yeah, I was going to leave him the fuck alone forever once he returned my wallet to me, but then I heard a strange sound.

It was as if someone was coming toward us.

Multiple someones.

Cole’s brow furrowed, and then he reached for me, yanking me behind him.

But it was too late.

A group of armed men surrounded us.

It looked as if they had come out of nowhere, but I knew that wasn’t possible.

They’d been slowly inching toward us from all sides, and we hadn’t noticed because we’d both been too caught up in our conversation.
